Climbing
The Purbeck coastline has some of the best climbing routes in northern Europe.
Whether you're looking for a gentle stroll or a full day on the water, Purbeck has the terrain and the facilities to deliver it.
The Isle of Purbeck sits at the convergence of some of southern England's finest outdoor terrain. To the south and east, the Jurassic Coast offers mile after mile of dramatic clifftop walking. Inland, the Purbeck Hills provide off-road cycling and long-distance riding. In the bay, the sheltered waters make Swanage one of the south coast's most popular spots for diving, paddleboarding, kayaking, and sailing. And from the pier, sea fishing has been a Swanage tradition for well over a century.
The activities below are all well-established in the area, with equipment hire, guided experiences, and local clubs available for most of them. You don't need to bring anything except enthusiasm and a reasonable pair of shoes.
The South West Coast Path passes directly through Swanage, and the walking in both directions is among the finest in southern England. Head south towards Durlston Country Park and Anvil Point for clifftop paths above chalk cliffs and open sea views. Head north along Ballard Down for the dramatic ridge walk that leads to Old Harry Rocks, the chalk sea stacks at Handfast Point that mark the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.
Inland, the Purbeck Hills offer quieter walking through ancient downland, with routes connecting the villages of Worth Matravers, Kingston, and Corfe Castle. The circular walk from Corfe Castle village, up and over the ridge and back via the railway, is a Purbeck classic that can be completed in half a day at a comfortable pace.
Routes range from flat, pushchair-friendly beach walks to serious ridge hikes with significant elevation. The terrain can be muddy after rain, especially on inland paths, sturdy footwear is recommended from October to April.
The Isle of Purbeck is superb cycling country, with a network of lanes, bridleways, and off-road trails that take in everything from gently rolling farmland to the dramatic ridge of the Purbeck Hills. The area is popular with road cyclists and mountain bikers alike, with enough variety to suit all abilities and fitness levels.
For road cyclists, the lanes between Swanage, Corfe Castle, and Worth Matravers are quiet, scenic, and largely free of heavy traffic outside the summer peak. The climb over Ballard Down is a hilly challenge with a great reward at the top. Off-road, the bridleway network across the Purbeck Hills offers technical single-track and open ridge riding with views that stretch to the coast in every direction.
Bike hire is available locally in the Isle of Purbeck, so there's no need to bring your own.
Swanage Bay is one of the most sheltered stretches of water on the south coast, which makes it ideal for a wide range of water sports. The bay is large enough to feel genuinely open, but protected enough to be suitable for beginners and families, with consistent conditions throughout the summer season.
Paddleboarding and kayaking are enormously popular here with equipment hire is available from the beach during the summer months, and the bay is calm enough for most days to offer a comfortable paddle out to the pier and back. Those with more experience can venture further along the coast, with the sea caves and rock arches around Durlston accessible by kayak on suitable days.
Sailing and windsurfing are also established in the bay, with a local sailing club offering social racing throughout the season. For younger visitors, the calm inshore water is perfect for learning the basics with a qualified instructor.
Swanage is one of the most celebrated shore-diving destinations in the British Isles. The waters around the bay and the Purbeck coast hold a remarkable range of marine life, from the curious cuttlefish that gather in Swanage Bay each spring to the wrecks off the Dorset coast.
The Swanage Pier columns are a classic beginner shore dive, home spider crabs, and an abundance of small fish. Anvil Point, Kimmeridge Bay, and Dancing Ledge all offer excellent diving for those with more experience. Visibility varies considerably with the seasons, spring and early summer typically offer the clearest conditions.
Local dive shops offer equipment hire, air fills, PADI courses, and guided dives. Kimmeridge Bay has a voluntary Marine Conservation Zone code of conduct that all divers are encouraged to follow.
Sea fishing has been a part of life in Swanage for centuries, and the pier remains one of the most popular fishing spots on the Dorset coast. Bass, mackerel, and pollock are caught regularly from the pier during the summer months, while wrasse, conger, and various flatfish are taken year-round by those who know where to look.
Charter boats operate out of Swanage during the season, offering half-day and full-day trips for groups of mixed experience. Boat fishing over the chalk reef systems offshore can produce excellent sport, particularly in the autumn when large bass and bream are active. Shore fishing from the beaches and rocky marks around Purbeck, including Dancing Ledge and Kimmeridge which is popular with visiting anglers throughout the year.
