Travel to Swanage
Nestled on the eastern edge of the beautiful Isle of Purbeck, Swanage is a traditional seaside town known for its sandy beach, dramatic coastal scenery, and relaxed pace of life. Despite its tranquil setting, the town is easily accessible by road, rail, and public transport, making it an ideal destination for day trips, weekends away, or longer stays in one of the many places to stay in the area.
Travelling by Car
Driving is one of the most convenient ways to reach Swanage, particularly if you wish to explore the surrounding countryside and Jurassic Coast.
The main route into the town is via the A351, which links Swanage with Wareham and the wider road network, including the A35. From there, you can connect easily to Bournemouth, Poole, and beyond.
From the east you can take the M27 to Dorset, Take the exit onto the A35, following signs for Dorchester. Continue on the A35 and take the exit for the A351, following signs for Swanage. Follow the A351 into Swanage.
If approaching from Poole, many visitors choose to cross the entrance to Poole Harbour using the Sandbanks Ferry. This short chain ferry operates throughout the year and provides a scenic and direct route to Purbeck, avoiding a longer drive via Wareham.
Parking:
There are several pay-and-display car parks close to the beach and town centre, as well as longer-stay options for visitors spending the day exploring. During peak summer months, arriving early is recommended.

Travelling by Train
While Swanage is not connected to the national rail network directly, it enjoys a unique and charming rail link via the heritage Swanage Railway between Corfe Castle and Swanage.
Mainline services operated by South Western Railway run regularly to Wareham from London Waterloo, Bournemouth, and Weymouth. From Wareham, you can continue to Swanage via bus or taxi.
Travelling by Bus and Public Transport
Frequent bus services connect Swanage with surrounding towns and transport hubs. Services operated by Morebus run year-round between Swanage, Wareham, and Bournemouth, providing a reliable alternative to driving.
These routes offer spectacular views across heathland and coastal landscapes, making the journey part of the experience rather than simply a means of getting here.
