Swanage and Purbeck Gallery

Swanage in the late 1800s

The photo below dates between 1875 and 1886. In the foreground you can see a horse and cart taking away sand which has been extracted from what is now known as Sandpit field. There are also spoil heaps from the sand extraction alongside the track which is now Shore Road.

To the left of the Mowlem building you can see stacks of Purbeck Stone ready to be loaded into boats.

On the beach are a number of Bathing Machines which were used to allow people to change out of their usual clothes, change into swimwear, and wade in the sea.

At the old pier you can see a paddle steamer loading passengers and the Wellington Tower near Peveril Point had its original spire on the top.
