Town: Langton Matravers
This year's Wilkswood Roots Reggae Festival will boast no less than six top ranking headliners across the weekend as reggae legends rub shoulders with upcoming bands and DJs from the UK and abroad. Main acts this year include former Soul II Soul frontman and reggae producer Jazzie B, dub poet and part-time Peaky Blinder Benjamin Zephaniah, vegan tunesmith Macka B, the bass heavy soundscapes of Congo Natty, French electronic dub from Manudigital and reggae royalty with Johnny Osbourne and the Upper Cut Band.
With 60 acts performing across four stages, this year's Festival will take place from Friday July 19th to Sunday July 21st 2019 at its usual Wilkswood Farm venue in the lush Purbeck countryside near Langton Matravers on the outskirts of Swanage in Dorset. An international collection of soundsystems, deejays and producers will perform on the Jah Spirit Stage, including Japan's Direct Impact, Bristol's Unique Star and female torch-bearers Sista Emma and Warriah Force. Dorset artists Sofi Reed, Krisi Boccherini, Ranking Tom and Bob Hill will join the packed and varied line-up of acoustic and spoken word acts appearing on the DJ Derek Stage whilst a posse of hot young DJs and selectors will be showcasing the best in drum & bass, dubstep and ragga in the late night Shhhbeen.
The Wilkswood Roots Reggae Festival is a family-friendly festival and there is plenty to keep your little ragamuffins entertained including a dedicated kid's field and a wooded clearing featuring storytelling and music. To encourage the whole family to come along, the Festival offers reduced prices for children up to the age of 17 and under-3s are free! For those that like their little luxuries, this year there is a glamping field with pre-pitched tents and campervans and caravans are also welcome. To keep up-to-date with latest news, line-ups and schedules there is even a festival app available for download from the Wilkswood website.
Both the Main Stage and the Jah Spirit Soundsystem Stage, as well as the main bar, are under cover so the music carries on whatever the weather. Elsewhere there's a chillout zone for festival-goers to take time out, street food stalls (including a Jamaican jerk barbecue, wood-fired pizza and vegetarian/vegan food), the main bar serving draught beer and ice cold lager and the Rumshak's infamous rum cocktails - we're still trying to work out what the 'magic ingredient' is but they taste great and get you dancing!
The Festival is now in its fourth year and previous headliners have included Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Mad Professor, General Levy, Brinsley Forde, Tippa Irie, Mikey General, Joe Ariwa, Earl Sixteen, Carroll Thompson, Janet Kay and Festus Coxsone. Organised by members of Bournemouth's Dubheart collective, the festival takes place over three days at Wilkswood Farm in Langton Matravers and the ticket price includes full admission and camping for three nights.
With the organisers expecting an other sell-out event, there are still some weekend tickets available, priced at £120 for adults and £80 for under 17s as well as very limited day tickets priced at £50 or £60 with camping. All tickets and information are available on the festival website: wilkswoodrootsreggae.co.uk.
