Enjoying the beach and sea early 1900s
A busy summer's day on the beach, packed with Victorian/Edwardian holidaymakers enjoying the seaside, a very popular pastime following the arrival of the railway to Swanage in 1885, which opened the town up to day-trippers and tourists.
Clothing & Fashion
The attire is distinctly Edwardian with women wear long white dresses with fitted bodices, elaborate feathered or flower-trimmed hats, and full skirts down to the ankle. Men are dressed in dark suits and hats. Even on the beach, modesty and formality were expected. Children are similarly well-dressed.
Beach Culture of the Era
- Bathing tents and canvas shelters line the upper beach, used for changing
- Deck chairs are visible, already a staple of British beach life
- A perambulator (pram) can be seen mid-image
- People are strolling, sitting, and socialising rather than swimming in modern fashion
The Backdrop
Victorian and Edwardian villas and hotels are visible on the clifftop, reflecting the town's growth as a seaside resort. Gas street lamps and a promenade railing are also visible.
