The two piers and Paddle Steamer at Swanage
Swanage had two piers in use in the early 1900s, an older stone and timber pier used for cargo, and a separate pleasure pier built in 1896. You can see both structures here, with the older working pier in the foreground and the promenade pier extending out to sea.
A paddle steamer is moored at the pier newer. You can see the large paddle wheel on its side and smoke rising from the funnel. These steamers ran popular excursion services along the Dorset and Hampshire coast with trips to Bournemouth, Poole, and the Isle of Wight.
