Studland sea defences removal at Middle Beach
The National Trust have almost completed the removal of the ageing sea defences at Middle Beach in Studland, Dorset, as part of its long-term coastal management plan. The concrete and wooden structures, originally installed to protect the shoreline, had reached the end of their life and were increasingly being damaged by the sea.
By taking them away, the Trust aims to allow the beach and surrounding coastline to return to a more natural state. This approach, known as “managed realignment”, accepts that the coastline will change over time and helps to create a more resilient and sustainable environment for both wildlife and people.
Middle Beach is a much-loved spot for locals and visitors, and the Trust recognises that the removal of the defences marks a significant change to the landscape. However, they hope that allowing the beach to evolve naturally will preserve its beauty and ecological value for generations to come.
The project is part of a wider commitment by the National Trust to adapt to the effects of climate change, rising sea levels, and increased storm activity along the UK’s coastline.
