Inside the Sandpit Field WWII Bunker Shelter
A close, front-on view into the sheltered seating area of the Second World War bunker on Sandpit Field, Swanage.
Beneath the deep concrete canopy, three recessed bays each hold a stone bench, set around a small paved floor enclosed by a low whitewashed wall.
Faded marks and a small handwritten tribute on the inner walls show how much the shelter has become part of local life, a quiet spot used by residents and visitors for decades.
Temporary fencing and notices now surround the site, and the cracked render, worn brickwork and ventilation bricks on the side wall are a reminder that this piece of Swanage’s wartime history is set to be demolished as part of the wider seafront project.
