Radar Memorial at St Aldhelms Head

The Radar Memorial at St Aldhelm's Head commemorates the pioneering radar research carried out at Worth Matravers between 1940 and 1942, work that proved crucial to the Allied war effort and laid the foundations of modern telecommunications.

Designed by local resident Tony Viney, the sculpture is a striking stainless-steel representation of two radar dishes, arranged so they also evoke a large fire basket, mounted on a Purbeck stone plinth.

Standing on the exposed clifftop near St Aldhelm's Chapel and the National Coastwatch station, it was unveiled on 27 October 2001 by Sir Bernard Lovell, in the presence of veteran scientists who had worked on the project during the war.
