Station Road in the late 1800s

This photo which we think dates the late 1800s or very early 1900s shows Station Road in the centre of town looking towards Institute Road.

On the right of the photo is Brown Family Butchers with several animal carcasses hanging outside the door. Further along the road are several more shops but the signs are too small to read the names.

A police officer can be seen standing on the pavement and a horse and cart is further along the road.

On the left is a building and stone wall which makes the road very narrow for traffic. A single gas-powered street lantern is on the left side of the photo next to the stone wall.
