Gwen Yarker will talk about this spectacular painting by the British Impressionist Arthur Meade. The painting shows the extensive panoramic view towards Poole Harbour with Viking longships sailing off the coast of Swanage. It was judged one of the most important pictures exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1898. Meade spent summers in Dorset and was the foremost influence on Dorchester born painter John Everett.

Gwen Yarker was curator of art at the National Maritime Museum and gave an illustrated talk at the PAW Festival in 2016 to a sell-out audience on her book about the Slade Painters who painted in Purbeck around 1900 to 1914. This talk sets the Meade painting in this wider context.
