A British biographical drama in which an amateur sailor attempts to cover up his failure to complete an around-the-world boat race.
The Mercy is a 2018 British biographical drama film, directed by James Marsh and written by Scott Z. Burns. It is based on the true story of the disastrous attempt by the amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst, played by Colin Firth, to complete the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race in 1968, and his subsequent attempts to cover up his failure.
Donald Crowhurst, a weekend sailor persuaded an investor to build him a yacht so that he could enter a round-the-world yacht race, with disastrous consequences. Colin Firth does brave and moving work as Crowhurst falls apart under the stress.
The film also stars Rachel Weisz, David Thewlis, Genevieve Gaunt, Jonathan Bailey, Andrew Buchan and Ken Stott. It is one of the last films scored by Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson.
